Matt McCoy
Matt McCoy

Matt McCoy was born in Texas, and grew up with a large extended family in a town smaller than Bellingham. He married Denise, earned a degree in International Business (with a minor in Spanish and Economics), and then lived in Southern France as a missionary for a year. Matt and Denise then settled back in Texas for a decade, where they had three kids, started a commercial concrete company, and became very involved with small groups in their non-denominational church.

Matt transitioned out of commercial concrete work and started asking a lot of questions about who God is, who we are, and how we might live. Those questions led Matt to investigate graduate schools, and Denise suggested the family move somewhere fun. Thus, in 2009 the family transitioned to Vancouver, BC, so Matt could attend Regent College. Matt graduated with an MDiv in 2013 (with a focus on Biblical Languages), and the family moved to Bellingham while Matt pursues ordination with the Presbyterian Church (PC-USA).

The role of Chaplain at St. Paul’s Academy involves many of Matt’s passions. He loves translating between language groups, be it Hebrew to English or “Middle-Aged Dad” to “Teenage Pacific Northwestern”. Due to his previous work in concrete, he still loves working with formation and finds many similarities between concrete formation and spiritual formation. He’s also passionate about passing a living faith from one generation to the next, learning how to read the Bible faithfully, and embracing a multi-faith as a Christian.
